This past December a group of local women gathered at the James store in Bedford Hills, New York to create gift bags for the women and children of the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility and the Northern Westchester Shelter for Domestic Violence. Each participant brought one or two of their favorite books as well as items such as candy, journals, pens, make-up, spa products, socks, gloves, candles, tea, hair accessories, puzzle books, lip gloss and accessories. Bookmarks were hand-decorated to go into each book and the bags were overflowing with goodies by the time they were complete.
One participant had been on vacation the week before and had asked their hotel’s front desk if they had anything to donate for the bags. She arrived with a box from the hotel and inside we found soaps, looofahs, lotions and, best of all, a handwritten letter from the head of housekeeping which said: “I am happy to help your organization with this small donation. I was once in the same situation as the women you are helping. It is the small, simple things that help us all get by.”
was asked to provide the bags and we were more than happy to contribute to this incredibly thoughtful and heartwarming effort of a local group.
