Joyce had a 50th birthday party in her yard last year. Aside from all the veggies and foods grown on her little farm she had an eclectic set of dishware that had us all wondering how many tag sales she’d visited to accumulate them.

When asked about the dishes she explained that she wasn’t willing to use paper and she didn’t want to invest in compostables and so she sought the least expensive (and in her mind the most sustainable) option:

She simply drove to the local Goodwill (about 2 miles from her house) and purchased 30 plates and assorted “silverware” for about $10. After the party, she re-donated them to Goodwill and plans to take the donation as a tax deduction.

Zero waste, 100% fun!

What are some of your ideas to reduce waste during this year’s picnic season?
