20160824 ecobags blog plastic cup

I’m actually astonished at how much single use plastic is still being used in this world – mostly because I live in a bubble of eco-conscious people.

The people I work with, my boyfriend, my friends, my sisters, my mother – everyone is conscious about how they tread on our planet. Sometimes I forget, that while this is my normal, it’s not everyone’s normal.

Nor can I expect it to be; that would be unrealistic.

So, when I walked  into a brewery – that I will leave unnamed, as everything was lovely otherwise –  last week for date night with the boyfriend I was both appalled and shocked that we were given our BBQ on paper plates with plastic cutlery – a spoon, fork, and knife for each of us. We looked at each other and sighed – there really was no other option as we stopped carrying around our reusable fork/knife/spoon combo when we returned stateside from over 2 years on the road.

We realized that we would have to make the reusable cutlery a staple in my bag once again: plan for the worst & hope for the best – one of life’s best motto’s.

Keeping that in mind, here is my list of the #1 items to keep in your purse or back-pack for these unhappy events:

  1. Reusable cutlery – this bamboo set from To-go ware is great, it comes with it’s own carrier pouch, and since it’s bamboo once you’re through with it (if you ever are) it’s biodegradable!
  2. A reusable bag small enough to scrunch up into your purse – I use mine at least once a day!
  3. A reusable water bottle & if you drink as much coffee as I do, a travel mug.
  4. A cloth napkin – etsy has some beautiful options as well. These are great for a myriad of things – from wrapping snacks to cleaning up the crumbs on your desk!

If you forget any of these items, and end up in a circumstance similar to my own, be kind to yourself. Remember that you are doing the best you can – and don’t get discouraged, instead learn from your experiences.

Go forth & be green!
